The Digi 002

The power of Pro Tools-how sweet it is

By Stephon Fraley

The Digi 002

Lots of pieces of gear out there claim to be an all-in-one solution to hard- disk recording, but few can actually grab hold of that ring and hang on to it. Products from Digidesign, however, seldom lose their grip. From the omnipresent and nearly omnipotent professional Pro Tools|HD to the entry-level MBox, Digidesign has proven they know their way around the dog-eat-dog world of digital audio. The Digi 002 reinforces that claim. It is the most powerful computer-based recording solution available at the project-studio level. Its combination of well-thought-out hardware design, distinctive yet easy-to-use interface, and masterful control capabilities is incredible. Plus, using Pro Tools LE software ensures compatibility with any Pro Tools project.

The buzz-the reality…

There was more than just a little speculation and anticipation when rumors leaked out that a new consumer market addition to the Digidesign family was on its way. I don't know what anyone else was imagining in the days leading up to the Digi 002's debut last year, but this unit far exceeds all my expectations.

The press release sent to me by Digidesign along with the latest and greatest Pro Tools LE (6.1!) describes the 002 as a FireWire-based mini studio. Well, they got the FireWire part right, but mini? There's nothing small about the 002's capabilities. Maybe they were just referring to its size, because at just 19"W x 6"H x 17"D, the Digi 002 is certainly not a space hog. Even on modestly sized desktops, there's still plenty of room for a computer monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

Hey there, good lookin'

A well-designed interface is just as much a part of the overall equation of value as how powerful the tool is. When bringing a pro-level tool in at consumer-level prices, companies sometimes make the mistake of putting ugly and cheap controls around an elegant and operable system, completely crippling the end product. Thankfully, Digidesign did not make that mistake. I love the way the Digi 002 looks and feels.

It's small but professional with a soft gray color scheme for the housing and most of the controls, and a brushed metallic faceplate for the control panel. The rounded corners and ergonomic controls are comfortable with a soft, cushioned feel that's very nice under your fingertips. The interface is well-thought-out with versatile controls for the channels, transport, options for playback and looping, and buttons that quickly call up the mix and edit windows, as well as plug ins.

More than just a pretty face

The 002 provides you with an incredible amount of control over your recording project in a way that feels completely natural. Take editing for example. By pushing just a few buttons you can call up the editing window and manipulate the waveforms using the tactile controls right in front of you, without leaving the Digi 002.

The faders and channel strip interfaces are taken from the Control|24 control surface. The faders are touch-sensitive and motorized, so making adjustments and switching between different tracks or sessions is stupid easy. The faders also give you direct manipulation of almost every parameter and plug-in available in Pro Tools LE, an outstanding capability that you really can't appreciate until you've used it a little. It's almost like cheating.

The channel pan knobs, likewise, can be used for more than just panning. Different functions, such as send levels and plug-in control, can be selected by using the channel view buttons located just above the scribble strips. The meters above the knobs represent the knob value, but can also function as meters during playback.

The LED scribble strips are very cool, allowing you to label your tracks with handy 4-character tags. These strips are multifunctional, though, displaying all kinds of pertinent information dependent upon which mode you're in.

Digidesign Digi 002 Firewire Music Production System

Even in doing something as simple as adjusting EQ, the Digi 002 shines. All you have to do is hit the EQ channel view button, select whichever track you need to adjust, then trim away.

The seat of power

The magic button, however, is definitely the navigational control interface. It's really not a single button, but the controls here are so well integrated and intuitive that it feels like you're using a single control instead of a cluster of buttons. The up, down, left, and right button array manipulate different characteristics based upon which mode you've selected. You select those modes via three buttons placed just north of the directional controls. The Bank button allows you to navigate through banks of eight tracks and Nudge is for moving through one track at a time. Zoom moves you in and out of the edit window.

Above and beyond

Just based on the combination of Pro Tools LE and the Digi 002 FireWire interface, it's definitely worth the money, but there are two additional features that push the Digi 002 to the next level of value and capabilities. The first is Digidesign's generous and wise decision to include four phenomenal mic preamps that include individual gain and high-pass filter controls in the interface. This preamp section also includes eight different balanced inputs, your choice of XLR or 1Z4" TRS, with two selectable 48V phantom power units built in.

All of the 1Z4" inputs are balanced TRS ins, which makes it even easier to use the Digi 002 for its second job, as a full-featured standalone digital mixer. With the push of a button, you can transform the Digi 002 from FireWire Pro Tools LE interface to a totally cool digital mixer. These two features make the Digi 002 more than worth the price. Just think, you'll be able to fit half your studio under your arm and the rest of it you can fit on a four-wheel hand truck. Sweet.

Digidesign Factory Bundles

An easy way to bag a whole lot more sound
By Stephon Fraley

Finding the right pieces of gear for converting your analog sounds into digital data requires judging specs such as bit and sampling rates, I/O, software compatibility, etc. And, equally important, price.

An attractive blend of the former results in good sound. An attractive number for the latter results in more cash for all the other stuff you need. But you still need your audio to sound good, not like you used a single-track recorder with the mic from your sister's karaoke machine … even if you did. There is an easy answer. From the bedroom to the big-time studio, Digidesign has a handle on digital audio.

Satis-Factory
Digidesign's Pro Tools LE systems, the Mbox, Digi 002, and Digi 002R, make it easy to get professional-sounding results. And now Digidesign has sweetened the deal even more with the Factory Bundles. A result of the savvy acquisition of Bomb Factory's (BF) line of world-class plug-ins, these special packages combine up to $2,000 in BF plug-ins with a Digidesign Pro Tools LE system for a fractional price increase.

Which means the time to move into Pro Tools is now. BF excelled at getting their soft sound processors to behave in very hardware-like ways. They even produced software versions of classics like the JOEMEEK SC2 and moogerfooger effects. With these plug-ins in your arsenal and a Pro Tools system under your arm, great digital audio is right around the corner.

Mbox: Kiddie pool or hot tub?
For those just looking to get their feet wet in the world of digital audio, the Mbox Factory Bundle will do the trick. Rest assured, though, you'll do way more than just get your feet wet. The Mbox is a friendly looking and easy-to-use piece of gear with enough muscle to get stuff done. And you'll get lots done with the extras included in the Mbox Factory Bundle.

The moogerfooger delay may be the warmest, richest delay plug-in available, which is totally appropriate considering its roots as a legendary piece of Bob Moog-designed gear. Joe Meek was legendary for the use of his own homemade, very musical compression and EQ equipment. With the SC2 and VC5 BF units, you get the exact same circuits, sounds, and response made famous by the originals. Cosmonaut Voice is a plug-in destined for universal acclaim. Shred your vocals with everything from distortion and white noise to sounds like telephone voice and space radio transmission. An intelligent limiter, Maxim boasts peak-recognition ability and transparent limiting that will far exceed your expectations.

So the Mbox is small. There's nothing wrong with small, especially when you're trying to save desk space or looking for a portable recording partner. And thanks to the miracle of modern technology, small doesn't mean that you miss out. The Mbox provides 24-bit A/D/A (analog/digital/analog) conversion at either 44.1kHz or 48kHz and 100 decibels of dynamic range, so your guitar or vocals will sound flawless. 2 Focusrite mic preamps with 48-volt phantom power let you use nice condenser mics for voices and acoustic instruments.

Secret agent 002
The 002 and 002R Factory Bundles come with the same software and plug-ins as the Mbox, but they up the ante with some alluring additions. The first is the BF-3A. This sweet compressor adds fat smoothness and sonic texture to any signal-perfect for making sounds jump out of the mix. Next, the moogerfooger Ring Modulator makes it easy to add clangorous textures to any signal. The SansAmp PSA-1 is a BF replica of the classic analog preamp used over and over to achieve righteous guitar sounds onstage and in the studio. Looking for luscious delay with a unique feel? The Tel-Ray Variable Delay has all the appeal of the '60s original and will add warm echo and delay to anything. And finally, you'll use the Voce Spin and Chorus/Vibrato effects over and over for vintage rotating speaker sounds and B-3-like vibrato. And of course, you also get the 002 or 002R. For those ready to come up from the basement, or at least get into some serious recording projects, the 002R is for you. This 2U FireWire interface can handle up to 32 streams of pristine audio. If mixing and manipulating audio with your mouse makes you see red, then the Digi 002 will definitely please. With it, you won't just record sounds-you'll own them. Right at your fingertips lay a wealth of controls and indicators-even motorized faders. Plus special transport controls let you handle your audio in Pro Tools without leaving the 002.

Whether you need a simple home setup to make your songs sound pro or are a project studio owner looking to take your first step into Pro Tools, these Factory Bundles make an easy choice even more obvious.

Digidesign Mbox 2 & Pro Tools 7

Now The Pro Tools LE USB Interface Is Even Sweeter

By Oscar Sommers

Digidesign Mbox 2 & Pro Tools 7

Digidesign has rolled out two big upgrades, giving me the chance to check out for this review the Mbox 2 and Pro Tools LE 7. Now they're both completely MIDI-fied, delivering powerful functionality and a whole new set of tools for Pro Tools LE users. Digidesign has always stayed focused on perfecting the audio abilities of Pro Tools, making it an industry standard. That focus has turned to MIDI with Pro Tools 7 LE and, as a result, it ships with a whole raft of MIDI-friendly features. This new MIDI-equipped Mbox is ready and waiting to be your complete tracking and composing solution.

Mbox 2, ahoy!

When designing the Mbox 2, Digidesign took the opportunity to give it a new look and layout. It's still compact with a solid feel thanks to an aluminum case that protects its circuitry-but now it's designed to be positioned either vertically or horizontally. A removable handle attachment makes the Mbox 2 easy to grab and places the face at an easy-to-read angle when it's horizontal. The layout of the face is different, even if the features have stayed the same. The headphone jack and level knob are still on the front, as are the buttons for Mono, 48V, Pad, DI/Mic, and controls for the two analog channels. I like the new setup better, though. The arrangement feels more intuitive, and a new design for the knobs makes them easier to use. The controls feel smooth, steady, and solid. With the exception of the headphone out, all the I/O is kept on the back, including the MIDI ports. There's also S/PDIF I/O, dual TRS 1/4" monitor outs, and the I/O for the two analog channels. Each channel features an XLR in, 1/4" instrument jack, and TRS line input-a healthy array of options that should meet anyone's small home-studio or portable tracking needs.

Internally, the preamps on the analog XLR inputs have been upgraded. Digidesign has switched to a design based very closely on the preamp from the Digi 002 and 002R. This circuit is an upgrade over the previous unit thanks to two features. First, it's designed to operate in closer cooperation with the power supply, so response is cleaner and quicker across the frequency range. Second, the sound is more transparent, so what hits your hard drive is purer, giving you increased processing flexibility with your audio.

Pro Tools does MIDI

There are a number of upgrades in version 7 of Pro Tools, but its seriously upgraded MIDI capabilities are a definite highlight. Plus, all the added features are extremely accessible. An example is the new Instrument Tracks. Instrument Tracks give you access to MIDI and its automation in the same channel strip for insanely easy tracking, editing, and monitoring control over both. You get 32 Instrument Tracks in a session, enough to insert nearly any instrument you want.

As you'd probably expect, Instrument Tracks also blend features from standard audio and MIDI tracks. Like standard MIDI tracks, they support multiple outputs for triggering more than one MIDI device from the same track, as well as triggering for external MIDI units. You can route and monitor the audio output with up to 10 sends on each track, and use plug-ins as inserts to process your audio. Add up all the Instrument Tracks features and it quickly becomes obvious that separate MIDI tracks will be rare. That lets you fill your 32-track count with more audio while using less tracks per session and saving some of your computer's resources.

You'll also find other MIDI tools like realtime MIDI processing, sample-based MIDI, an on-screen MIDI keyboard, a Selecting and Splitting Notes window, a Quantize Groove window, input support for Quantize Groove, a Remove Duplicate Notes command, and new options for importing MIDI to a timeline. These, as well as a few other features, give Pro Tools and MIDI hand-in-hand functionality.

DigiTech Mbox 2

Interface improvements plus

Besides MIDI, there are other new tricks in Pro Tools LE 7. The first is the elimination of separate audio and MIDI regions. Now there are regions, all contained in the same list, that can easily be looped for more flexibility in composing. Next, Digidesign reorganized the commands and created some new menus to offer an improved and easier-to-navigate menu system. Pro Tools LE 7 also supports REX and AAC files, and drag-and-drop audio and MIDI from the Finder, and it loads sessions faster. It also offers hyperthreading and dual processor support and-my personal favorite-has immensely helpful Tool Tips through all the windows.

The short time I spent with the Mbox 2 and Pro Tools LE 7 was immensely satisfying. Installation of the hardware and software on my Power Mac was quick, easy, and painless. Firing up a fresh session was too. I definitely saw a quicker response than the last version I used: 6.8.1. LE 7 was responsive and agile the entire time, and I quickly became a big fan of Instrument Tracks, revised menu system, and Tool Tips. I also like the hardware control over latency the Mbox gives you with the Mix knob. The new Ignition Pack software bundle that comes with the Mbox is incredible, too. It even includes FXpansion's BFD drum library, my favorite because of its realistic, tweakable sounds and cool, well-designed graphic interface. If you're not a Pro Tools user yet, now is a great time to become one. Digidesign has made Pro Tools LE 7 and the Mbox even more of a sweet deal for music making.

Digidesign Pro Tools LE 7

Your golden ticket to professional music production

By Oscar Sommers

Your golden ticket to professional music production

No musician wants to sound like an amateur. We all want the right sounds from the right gear to create the music we hear in our heads. When you record, you want your songs to sound clear, full, and professional. You want the right capabilities and the right gear. Now—more than ever—Digidesign Pro Tools LE is the solution for the musician who wants to record and mix like a pro. It gives you access to the same functionality and capabilities professional engineers and producers use every day to record and mix the music you'll be listening to tomorrow on your iPod.

To the seventh power

Over the years Digidesign has defined the audio side of modern music production. That's always been the focus of Pro Tools and is still its bread and butter. Version 7—for Pro Tools HD, Pro Tools LE, and Pro Tools M-Powered—opens a new era for Pro Tools. In addition to the MIDI features Pro Tools now boasts, there are also plenty of new tools to make recording and creating music easier, encourage collaboration with other musicians, and fit the way you want to work.

Of course, when you buy Pro Tools LE 7, it comes attached to some pretty sweet hardware. The Mbox, Digi 002, and Digi 002R are powerful, flexible, and easy-to-use computer audio interfaces. Lots of Pro Tools HD users take LE systems with them when they need to get portable with their studio so everything they record on the road integrates flawlessly with their system back home. That's another reason why Pro Tools LE is such a fantastic deal for musicians and project studio owners. I frequently take my LE-recorded audio into other studios and my tracks transfer perfectly to their Pro Tools HD setups.

Pro Tools does MIDI

Once it decided to make Pro Tools MIDI-capable, Digidesign really went all the way and did it right. I found the MIDI tools in LE 7 to be extremely capable of handling all my needs. Through the MIDI options menu I got in-depth control over all aspects of the MIDI performance, from the length and attack of notes to the overall feel of the groove. Three windows gave me most of that control: Select/Split Notes, Change Duration, and Transpose. The quantize functions for groove feel and application reside in a separate window.

The best part of the MIDI features is that most of the functions are available in real time. Realtime accessibility makes it easy to tweak on the fly, upping the possibilities for true musical creativity. Sample-based MIDI tracks keep you locked into time code no matter how you change the tempo. Overall, the features Digidesign implemented make working with MIDI simple and easy. The new Instrument Tracks are a definite highlight. Extremely accessible, they give you access to MIDI and its automation in the same channel strip for insanely easy tracking, editing, and monitoring control over both. You get 32 Instrument Tracks in a session, enough to insert nearly any instrument you want. Instrument Tracks blend features from audio and MIDI tracks for the ultimate functionality. You get multiple outputs for triggering more than one MIDI device from the same track, as well as triggering for external MIDI units. Ten sends on each track let you route and monitor the audio output and use plug-ins as inserts to process your audio. Instrument Tracks are not only incredibly useful, they'll also cut down on the need for separate MIDI tracks. You can fill your 32-track count with more audio while using less tracks per session, thus saving some of your computer's resources.

Streamlined for use

There are other new tricks in Pro Tools LE 7 to make it easier to use. Separate audio and MIDI regions have been eliminated and now regions are all contained in the same list. Even better, regions can easily be looped for more flexibility in composing. Looping has become a standard part of the recording process for a lot of musicians, and Pro Tools is ready to meet their needs.

A number of the commands and menus have been reorganized to offer an improved and easier-to-navigate menu system. Pro Tools LE 7 also supports REX, ACID, and lots of other audio files, along with drag-and-drop audio and MIDI. If at any point during a session you find yourself a little lost, Pro Tools now has helpful Tool Tips accessible in all the windows to keep you oriented. I didn't quantify its speed, but it seems to me the overall response of the system has improved as well.

Digidesign's Pro Tools LE Systems are more attractive than ever for musicians and project studios. They deliver everything you need for recording and making music on your computer, and the new functions make it all that much easier. Why use anything less than what the professionals use?

Service in the US and Canada will be provided through the new Focusrite distributor: American Music & Sound, 5304 Derry Avenue Suite C, Agoura Hills, CA, 91301. For Focusrite service, call 1-866-FOCUSRITE. Digidesign continues to service the Digidesign/Focusrite co-branded products Control|24, MBox, and Command|8.

If you already have a Digidesign RA number, please send your product to Thermal Relief Design, Cheyenne West Corporate Center, 2750 W. Brooks Ave., Suite 106, North Las Vegas, NV 89032, USA. They will complete warranty service under the existing authorization number.
